SAMe & Silybin (Denamarin®)
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) & Silybin (Denamarin®) Supplement for Liver Support in Dogs & Cats
Denamarin® (SAMe and silybin) is a supplement given to support the liver in dogs and cats. It can be used preventively, for example, when a dog takes another medication with known potential liver complications. It’s also used when a pet has active liver disease.
Because Denamarin is a supplement, its claims have not been verified by the FDA. However, several veterinary studies support its use both preventively and as a treatment.
Denamarin® Dosing & Administration
Denamarin® is usually given twice a day at first, and the dosing frequency may be reduced over time.
Give Denamarin® on an empty stomach, which means no food or other medications within one hour of the dose. If using the tablet form, do not crush the tablets. A chewable form is also available, which some pets prefer. Contact your pet’s veterinary team before making any dose changes.
Missed Doses & Changing Medications
If your pet misses a dose of Denamarin®, give it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next scheduled dose time on the prescription label. If it’s close, skip the missed dose and give the next dose at the regular scheduled time. Do not administer double doses.
Contact your pet’s veterinary team before making changes to a Denamarin® plan.
Potential Side Effects of Denamarin®
Denamarin® is generally well-tolerated, and most animals won’t experience side effects. Uncommonly reported side effects include gastrointestinal upset, including inappetence, vomiting, and diarrhea.
There’s also a possibility that animals who are allergic to the ragweed family will be allergic to this supplement.
