Frequently asked Neurology questions

  • A veterinary neurologist is a veterinarian with advanced training in diagnosing and treating conditions of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. After veterinary school, they complete several additional years of specialized training and board certification in neurology and neurosurgery.

At Remedy Veterinary Specialists, our neurology team includes two board-certified veterinary neurologists, Dr. Carrie Jurney and Dr. Mona Qahwash. With access to advanced imaging like MRI and a full range of medical and surgical options, we're here to help pets with seizures, back pain, difficulty walking, and other neurologic concerns.

  • It depends on your pet’s condition. Neurologic issues affecting the brain or spine often require imaging like MRI or procedures like spinal taps. If the concern involves the muscles or nerves, we may recommend electrodiagnostic tests (such as electromyography and nerve conduction studies), muscle biopsies, or specialized lab work. At your appointment, our team will evaluate your pet and walk you through the diagnostics we recommend, step by step.

  • A veterinary MRI is one of the most advanced tools we have to diagnose problems in the brain and spine. Unlike bones, the brain, spinal cord, and nerves are soft tissues and they’re protected by bone so they don’t show up well on x-rays. MRI allows us to see these structures in high detail.

If your dog or cat is experiencing neurological symptoms like seizures, balance issues, back pain, or trouble walking, an MRI helps us identify the underlying cause. This non-invasive imaging technique plays a key role in diagnosing conditions such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), brain tumors, inflammation, and more.
